Leadership Development Expeditions
Through Leadership Development Expeditions (LDE), learners develop their capacity for leadership and build a deep understanding of their own strengths and contributions as a leader in a high-performing team. LDE graduate, undergraduate, alumni, and custom experiences draw on outdoor experiential education theory and challenge participants to serve as leaders during an adventure expedition. These programs develop leadership skills through rigorous study of leadership, candid self-assessment and reflection, and hands-on practice in challenging environments.
Who can take Leadership Development Expedition courses?
- CIL offers three sections of Summer LDE courses in Norway: one for Johns Hopkins undergraduate students and two for Carey Business School Flex MBA and Full-time MBA students.
- CIL also offers LDE programs for Hopkins alumni and custom LDE programs for professionals and their organizations.
• LDE activities such as backpacking and kayaking require moderate physical fitness and a willingness to experience physical and social discomfort as part of learning. No prior mountaineering or kayaking experience is required.
• Instructors and guides take precautions to reduce the risk of injury, but adventure activities involve inherent risk and uncertainty. Contact Mike Doyle to discuss physical demands, accessibility, or accommodations.

The program provides a framework for leadership and teamwork through a shared language that allowed a group of strangers–of various ages and physical ability–to get from point A to point B on a timeline, feeling not only emotionally and physically cared for but also with a sense of pride in the individual and team growth.
