LDE Undergraduate
Undergraduate Expedition Courses
Beginning in summer 2027, CIL’s Leadership Development Expedition course will challenge Hopkins undergraduates to lead as they navigate Norway’s rugged coasts and mountains.

LDE Undergraduate in Norway is an adventure-based learning program that focuses on helping students develop leadership skills and capacity through challenging adventure activities that require critical skills such as communication, decision-making, conflict resolution and team-based problem solving.
Offered through the JHU Global Education Office, this undergraduate elective takes place in the majestic fjords and mountains of Norway, starting and ending in the town of Bergen. Over 10 days, students will work together as an expedition team to navigate along water trails and hiking terrain, moving each day between rustic campsites that offer stunning views.
Students will be responsible for leading each other through various challenges and decision-making points in areas of navigation, time management, primitive cooking and camp setup.
Throughout the trip, students will focus on enhancing individual and team performance, learn and apply appropriate leadership models, and provide and receive structured feedback for their own growth as a leader and teammate.
Kayaking and Hiking
Discover Norway’s fjords by kayak and on foot. Paddle beneath towering cliffs to secluded shores accessible only by water, then hike trails dotted with subalpine wildflowers and wild berries. Clear streams and rivers add to the scenery as you make your way toward mountain summits with sweeping views of the fjords below.

Participants should be in reasonably good physical condition to get the most from this course. Please contact CIL to discuss the activity level and any questions or concerns about participating.

Physical Demands & Safety
-
This course is physically challenging and requires students to be in moderate physical health and possess a willingness to experience physical and social discomfort for the sake of learning. However, students do not need any prior mountaineering or kayaking experience.
-
Instructors and guides take risk management and personal safety very seriously and take appropriate measures to mitigate chance for accident or injury. However, this is an adventure-based course which includes a certain level of inherent risk and uncertainty. For students with physical disabilities or needs that might require accommodations, or if you have any questions about the level of physical activity, please contact Mike Doyle to discuss options.
What made the Norway expedition so meaningful wasn’t just what we learned about leadership, but the relationships we built along the way. Over two years later, this group continues to be a source of friendship, encouragement, and support.
